Setting smart goals

Enhancing academic consistency and engagement

My first goal for the Winter 2025 semester is to improve my academic consistency while increasing my engagement during labs, simulations, and classroom activities. I want to stop restricting myself or staying in the background and instead become more open, confident, and present in my learning. To support this, I plan to begin assignments earlier, break them into smaller steps, and set personal deadlines a few days before the actual due date. I will also participate actively during labs and simulations by asking questions when I am unsure, volunteering when possible, and avoiding assumptions by seeking clarification. I will measure my progress by noticing whether I manage my workload more steadily, feel more prepared for labs, and contribute more during group work. By April 2025, my aim is to feel more organised academically and more willing to step forward, practise skills, and be fully involved in the learning process.

Developing a professional nursing identity

My second goal is to continue developing the professional identity I want to carry into nursing practice. Even though I am early in the program, I want to begin building the habits and mindset that align with the nurse I hope to become—someone who leads with empathy, practises with accountability, advocates confidently, and provides culturally safe care. To work toward this, I plan to reflect regularly after labs and simulations, stay open to constructive feedback, and practise communication skills that help me build trust with others. I will monitor this goal by paying attention to how consistently I show up prepared, how comfortable I am sharing ideas or concerns, and whether I am becoming more intentional about how I speak, listen, and interact. By the end of Winter 2025, I hope to see the early foundations of the professional nurse I aspire to be: grounded, compassionate, reflective, and committed to growth.

Creating healthier routines for balance

My final goal is to create healthier routines that support balance between school, work, and personal well-being. Nursing school demands energy, resilience, and emotional steadiness, and I want to prevent burnout by managing my time in a healthier, more sustainable way. I plan to schedule specific study blocks, protect at least one rest day per week, and use timers or structured study sessions to stay focused without overwhelming myself. I will measure progress by tracking my stress levels and noticing whether I feel more in control of my time, complete tasks earlier, and maintain steady engagement with course material. By April 2025, I want to feel more balanced, less rushed, and more confident in my ability to manage both my responsibilities and my health.
